A zine featuring art, poetry and essays by a variety of animists describing our relationships with, and giving praise to, the smallest of gods — those spiritual entities who are closely bound to distinct physical forms or locations. Individual or collective beings with names, personalities and agency, who receive offerings and respond to prayer and ritual, but whose presence is only acknowledged by, at most, a handful of people.
Nine-stanza rhyming poem honoring an aspect of Odin who I first met in childhood dreams – a wise (but somewhat menacing) hermit surrounded by books in his forest home. Illustrated with vintage initials, pen-and-ink drawings, antique map, and hand-embellished with rubber stamps. Originally a limited edition handmade book, it is now available as a printed mini-book. Large brass coin in honor of the god Hermes, featuring an image adapted from an ancient vase painting, with the reverse showing a ram’s head, crossroads, and four epithets in Greek. Can be used as a miniature traveling shrine, offering or cult image, or lucky talisman.
Large wooden medallion features two faces of Dionysos: one on side, a mask of the god with bull horns and ivy, on the other side, a skull colonized by mushrooms. These evoke the ancient Orphic inscription BIOS – THANATOS – BIOS (Life-Death-Life), the power and Mystery of this most complex and paradoxical deity.
